Luxury of the Trends 2009 |
| |
Due to the hurried way of modern life, human beings have to adapt ourselves to the surroundings and society full of chaos, including global warming and the global economic slowdown which have to be gradually solved. All of these have affected the human mind and way of life, causing us to seek new things and remembrance the traditional way of life, including culture and lifestyles which are different from those of the present time. These can be conveyed by various manners that are easy to understand, including artworks, clothing fashion, and jewelry which all of us can touch and perceive. This is similar to stories being communicated by many types of works, such as artworks we use to decorate our rooms and fashion clothes we choose to wear, all of which can reflect our own identity. In addition, jewelry the wearer carefully chooses to wear can convey his/her cultural history and taste. The criteria for consideration are design, materials, manufacturing technology, as well as various kinds of beautiful gems used for decoration.
An excessive effort to keep pace with ever-changing fashion trends is very dangerous, since it causes the loss of identity, style, and natural charm. We should learn to adapt to every situation in our lives. Fashion comes and goes, but style is forever. This is the viewpoint of Yves Saint Laurent, the iconic fashion designer who just passed away in June 2008. It is extremely certain that his viewpoint is the truth because the H&M brand also stated that the Internet has generated fashion fast forward, enabling each person to create his/her own fashion trend without trying to keep pace with global fashion. At the same time, fast forward is also accompanied by slow motion. It is believed that fast forward could damage the quality of fashion. This may lead to the end of fashion. Therefore, there is a group of designers who try to maintain slow-motion fashion. However, luxury of fashion would certainly be hidden in both fast-forward and slow-motion fashion.
Luxury of the Trends 2009 is luxury which is the effusion of the wearer's inner mind, reflecting charm, magnificence and minimal style. No one can deny a direct and widespread influence of stars and celebrities on consumers, such as wearing only a jewelry watch and a pair of earrings, or carrying a favorite handbag and wearing a bracelet. This style is categorized under the concept of "Less is more LUXURY".

The 2009 jewelry trend can be categorized into four styles as follows:
1. Jewelry Culture : This jewelry style conveys culture. The wearing style or pattern, and the symbol which is the jewelry piece's identity indicate its culture through the minimalist presentation, such as Chinese lion and beading technique or Inlay technique (blocking or engraving one kind of material on another material, like splicing materials into various forms) which can be seen in Tibet work. This style also includes the symbols of various tribes, such as eagle or fox which are the symbols of Native Americans, ear of rice which is the symbol of Thais, etc. |
| 2.Geomatrix : This style is characterized by geometric shapes which are well-arranged or piled up to create dimensions. However, this style is not a mixture of various shapes and cause dazzling. Instead, it emphasizes simplicity of jewelry pieces. The surface of materials may be polished to make them look different and the shapes may be connected, but the style is not very complicated. |
| 3. Super Natural : This is the natural style which is created in surrealistic colors or shapes. For example, the pictures of flowers or animals are designed on the patterns, and the details are added by adding various materials with an emphasis on eye-catching colors which are different from natural colors. This style is like imaginary paintings augmented by mysterious magic, causing what we see in nature to be more extraordinary. |
| 4. Universe : This style emphasizes odd shapes or uses simple, but perfect, order. There may be the use of other materials, apart from metal, such as bleached leather. The major emphasis is on curve |

The jewelry design techniques which can be obviously noticed in the year 2009 can be categorized into three types as follows:
1. Shadow and Volume : This technique is to put one material on another material or to make the surface look deeper in order to create the jewelry piece's shadow and dimensions. It is the use of material shapes to create attractive designs. Mostly, jewelry pieces designed by this technique are separately created before being assembled, similar to simple clothes dressed with a belt or a jacket to create dimensions or volume. |
| 2. Surface Décor : This technique is to make the surface convex, together with dispersing the weight over the surface. However, the weight is not thoroughly dispersed like creating texture which mostly makes metal entirely matte. The convex surface may be overlapped designs on the ring, or the bezel which is convex over the surface. |
| 3. Structure Complexity : This technique is to utilize various structures, including the interior structure of buildings or machinery, and the structure of fruits which have the appealing inner structure when they are cut off, such as a dragon fruit's or pomelo's inner structure. |

All of the wearing styles, jewelry styles, and design techniques in the year 2009 are what we have seen before. However, there will be a combination of shapes and surface which are new ideas, making jewelry pieces more attractive. The designer can select the colors of both materials and gemstones to convey the sensation of the jewelry piece. Therefore, the 2009 jewelry trend is the art of design which communicates many stories, like a mirror which reflects our identity, including modernity and lifestyle. The hidden power of gems sparkles beautifully and perfectly again on the bodies of human beings who live amidst civilization, fashion, and culture.
